Legislation to ban hate symbols like swastikas, Confederate flags and nooses at public schools statewide easily passed the House of Delegates but died in a Senate committee when the General Assembly adjourned last week.

Del. Michele Guyton, a Democrat who represents a rural, mostly White area of Baltimore County and the billโ€™s sponsor, said sheโ€™s not sure why the legislation failed.

โ€œI was surprised the bill didnโ€™t pass,โ€ Guyton said. โ€œI thought this was a bill that would really be well-appreciated by this yearโ€™s legislative body.

She said she hasnโ€™t decided whether she will propose it again next year.
