It’s been 20 years since Tupac Shakur was killed at the age of 25 in a drive-by shooting. Before he became a rap icon and self-styled “thug,” he was a student at Baltimore School for the Arts.
A YouTube video which cuts together footage from his stint in Baltimore from 1986 to 1988 shows Shakur’s enthusiasm for music, dancing, and literature as well as his interest in social justice. Shakur reveals that he considered Baltimore “ignorance town” when he first got here, and it undermines his eventual one-dimensional gangsta rap persona.
As a bonus, we get to see Shakur dancing with Jada Pinkett to “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
