If all goes according to plan, the Sparrows Point blast furnace will be imploded today at 1 PM. Fans of giant explosions, take note.As the Baltimore Sun reports, the furnace is on its way out because the area is being redeveloped. In other words, it’s time to say goodbye to an icon of Baltimore’s industrial past, and hello to — well, another industrial site. But hopefully one that’s greener and more in tune with 21st century demands.
The public is not permitted to observe the explosion from nearby, but when a giant 32-story structure that weighs 11 million (!!) pounds is knocked down, you don’t have to be rightthere to see some action. Go ask your friends in southeast Baltimore if you can watch from their roof deck.
