400 Bretton Place, Guilford, Baltimore.
Hot House: Palmer & Lamdin Tudor Revival in Guilford. 7 Beds/3 Baths. 3,139 Square Feet. Asking price: $530,000.
What: If there is a Palmer & Lamdin house on the market, you know I am probably going to write about it. There are several of these “places” in Guilford, where the houses are in rows, and are usually very English-inspired. Among them are Bretton Place, Chancery Square, York Court, Bedford Place, Charlcote Place, Hadley Square and Eastway Court.
This is an unusual house, angled at the intersection of Bretton Place, Suffolk and Juniper Roads. Along some of these places, the houses are an alternative to placing small units on small lots. The attached units made better use of limited sites, and yielded a more artistic structure and landscape at a lower cost. In addition to creating a unified landscape, these semi-detached houses permitted increasing density without visual crowding.
And now we come to 400 Bedford Place, a seven-bedroom, three-bath house over four floors. Although the house was constructed in 1920, the amenities are 21st century! Many of the original details remain in the house.

As you enter the ground floor, there is a staircase straight ahead, bisecting the house. On your right is the dining room and the kitchen, and on your left is a large living room.

The second-floor features four bedrooms, and one full bath, and the third floor holds the primary bedroom, plus two more bedrooms and an additional full bath. One of the third-floor bedrooms could be combined with the primary bedroom for an en-suite bath. In the basement, there is plenty of room for a spacious laundry room, and an exercise room.

Where: Bretton Place is nestled on the east side of Guilford, in highly walkable area, including to the near-by Saturday Waverly Market. Initially, this house can be a little difficult to find because of Guilford’s system of one-way roads and dead-ends. So, be sure to turn on your GPS!

Final Appraisal: This house is the best of two worlds – it’s got plenty of bedrooms, but it’s not massive. You have adjacent neighbors on either side, which will cut down on your heating bill over the winter. The listing for the house is here.
