What: For Baltimoreans of a certain age, Four East Madison conjures up broken bones and visits to the orthopedic surgeons… or maybe that’s just me! For many years, Four East, as it was known, was the offices of the city’s premier orthopedic group, dating from the time when Mount Vernon was filled with doctors’ offices and elegant homes.

After Four East, which was the oldest orthopedic practice in the country, disbanded in 2004, the house was converted back to a private residence, and then it became an inn and B&B,
Madison House. Now, this gorgeous 1850s house is on the market, updated for today’s homeowner.

From the street, this house gives no clues as to what lies inside. Spectacular details including elaborate crown moldings, beautiful stone fireplace surrounds, arched doorways, original hardwood floors, bay windows, graceful staircases and much more. The walls of the numerous parlors, sitting rooms and dining room are papered with period-appropriate William Morris wallpapers, all with matching borders and wainscoting.

The large eat-in kitchen, which overlooks the lush garden, features French-style cabinets and a massive commercial eight-burner, two oven range. And the lush garden, a rarity for a townhouse, is shaded by old trees. To keep the space low maintenance, the garden has meandering brick pathways and is a perfect place for dining al fresco.

Each of the nine bedrooms have adjoining bathrooms, perfect for the set up as a bed and breakfast or an inn, for which it is licensed. The bedrooms are not currently as decorative as the main rooms, but they each have a queen-size bed and other amenities.

Where: Four East Madison is in the heart of Mount Vernon. It’s just a few steps off of Charles Street with its numerous restaurants, bars and cultural attractions. The house is several blocks south of Penn Station and the JFX, perfect for visitors. MICA and the University of Baltimore are in the immediate area, and several hospitals are in close proximity, all good for out-of-town visitors. The closest city school is the Baltimore School for the Arts.

Final Appraisal: Four East Madison is a house filled with history, from its earliest days as a private home, to becoming the site of the earliest orthopedic practice to its new life as an inn or bed and breakfast. If you’re looking for the ultimate work-from-home experience, maybe becoming an inn-keeper is the life for you. And this house is the perfect location.

The owner is willing to sell all of the furnishings, and many of the artworks separately from the house.
