205 Goodwood Gardens, Roland Park, Baltimore

Hot House:  Elegant, tranquil house on Goodwood Gardens. Six bedrooms, four baths, 6,000 square feet. Includes pool, pool house and garage on a double lot. Asking price: $2.75 million

What: Arguably, the block-long Goodwood Gardens is the most elegant street in Baltimore, with some of the most beautiful houses in the city. Decorator Billy Baldwin grew up here, which may account for his decades-long reputation as a tastemaker to the elite.

This house doesn’t scream, it whispers. The myriad details show the attention given to making it special, and the families who have been stewards of the home have respected its history and left the details in place.

As you enter through the beautiful columned portico, graceful arches and leaded glass windows give you a taste of what’s to come.

A double-length living room with its Tudoresque ceiling beams is anchored by a hearty fireplace, and sets of French doors leading to the grounds and terrace.

The dining room, as well as several of the other main rooms, also has a fireplace. The light-filled eat-in kitchen has been fully modernized, yet retains some of the original elements and has an adjacent sunroom.

Several of the six bedrooms are en suite and some have fireplaces. A second-floor study, again with a fireplace, makes a perfect retreat for watching movies, catching up on email or just reading a good book.  The third floor, and the main staircase, are lit by a triangle-paned glass skylight. Several of the third-floor bedrooms have charming demi-lune windows overlooking the grounds, which are filled with old-growth plantings and trees.

The basement level holds a game room, a media area and a huge wine room, capable of holding hundreds of bottles of your favorite wines. There is also a laundry room with storage and a central folding and sorting area.

Outside, the lovely private pool area really elevates this house. Overlooked by a large screened porch on one side, and a gorgeous pool/guest house on the other, the pool is a cool oasis during our humid Baltimore summers.

The pool/guest house has a kitchenette, two full baths, a fireplace and laundry. And there is also a garage with space for three to five cars. The double-lot grounds also hold a firepit, established flower and vegetable gardens and several patio areas.

Where: Goodwood Gardens is in Roland Park, just a block long, on the west side of Roland Avenue, north of Cold Spring Lane. The house is within walking distance of the restaurants (Petit Louis and Johnny’s) on Roland Avenue, and close to the shopping areas on Roland Avenue, Cold Spring Lane and the Rotunda. It is close to the Roland Park area schools, both public and private. It’s just a short trip down Cold Spring Lane to the JFX.

Final Appraisal: Each of the dozen or so houses on Goodwood is a spectacular example of early 20th-century architecture and showcases the best of Roland Park. Houses on Goodwood Gardens don’t come on the market very often, so this is a rare opportunity to own a stunning home. The listing for the house is here.
