What: Safe, affordable … and, and, AND … good schools. These are the big three factors driving first time home buyers as millennials begin, after a slight delay, to enter the real estate market in droves. It’s an elusive combination, but here in Idlewylde, a family neighborhood adjoining Stoneleigh, the highly ranked Stoneleigh Elementary, Dumbarton Middle, and Towson High schools can take your children up to college — capably and for free. Also tossed in for free, tons of curb appeal, Idlewylde’s hippy charm (think Portlandia), tons of kids and the feeling of living among real people.
Like the rest of the houses in Idlewylde, this one is small. But also like many of its neighbors, it has a large, floored attic, which would make a great master suite. So common is this upgrade that the sellers decided not to redo the roof, which would have made the house more expensive and been wasted should the buyers decide to “build up.” (Current roof is fine, but over 10 years old.) Although there are stairs up to the front door, the backyard and parking pad are flat.
Where: Idlywylde adjoins both Stoneleigh and Aneslie in Towson. It’s about a half mile east of York Road, and a few blocks south of the Country Club of Maryland golf course. It’s also very near the 12-acre green space of Overlook Park, with trails, a waterfall and ball fields.
Would Suit: Real people, with real (or soon to be real) children.
Why: “Sweet tea” front porch and wooden swing.
Why Not: Bedrooms have only teeny-tiny closets, although lots of storage elsewhere.
NB: Three lemonade stands in a two block area last Saturday. These kids are go-getters…
Beautiful home in quiet neighborhood convenient to everything.
