5208 Tilbury Way, Homeland, Baltimore.

Hot House: A Slice of France in the Middle of Homeland. 4 Beds/3 Baths. 2,453 Square Feet. Asking price: $699,000.

What: Homeland was established by the Roland Park Company in the 1920โ€™s and much of the housing stock dates to that period. The work was divided between several architectural firms, including personal favorites, Palmer & Lamdin, and the architect of this Norman-style house, E.H. Glidden, Jr. Because many of these architects had spent time in France during WWI, you see glimpses of French-style homes throughout the neighborhood.

The French-Norman design begins outside with the steeply-pitched rooflines, the dovecote at the peak, and the rustic stone and live-edged planking. Inside, there are arched doorways, exposed beams, vaulted ceilings and built-in bookshelves. The room layout is not the traditional four-down, four-up, but rather a design which looks like it evolved over time.

The details in this house are emblematic of the time, and the craftsmanship that was prevalent then. The casement windows with custom ironwork, curved stone staircase, bespoke fireplace, two stone patios and a historic plaque with the architect and builderโ€™s names and the date the house was built, all add to its charm.

The first floor includes a large family room, a stone sitting room, dining room, and kitchen. Off the kitchen is another room, which could be used as needed. Also on the first floor is the primary suite with an en-suite bath and walk-in closet.

The second floor features two bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bath between them. Additionally, there is a third room which might be another bedroom, a family room or an office. The property includes a two-car garage.

Where: Tilbury Road in the heart of Homeland runs parallel to Springlake Way, and is a lovely and quiet street. The house is one of several similar ones, also designed by E.H. Glidden and built by Wells (itโ€™s a Wells-built home!). Homeland is one of the most convenient neighborhoods in Baltimore, just a short drive, or a longer walk, to so many amenities, including Belvedere Square, the Senator Theatre, the stores along York Road, and much more.

Final Appraisal: If youโ€™re a Francophile or have longed to live in a small chateau in Normandy, this might be the closest that you get to that dream. Itโ€™s not your traditional center-hall Colonial but has much more personality. Oh, la la! The listing for the house is here.
