What: It’s a safe bet that real estate broker Whit Harvey knows what buyers are looking for. This house was a second home for the prominent Baltimore realtor and his wife Joanne Larson. After selling a house in Florida they wanted a larger property in Baltimore and decided that before they left Devon Hill, they wanted to do it right. Forty weeks later, a 1980’s condo with too many small rooms and not enough light has become what buyers are looking for, especially at this price point — a glamorous and livable home that maximizes every inch of space. Above-mentioned high-end finishes include Marvin casement windows and sliding door to terrace, fireplace with slate surround, new hinges and hardware on original interior solid wood doors, rift cut oak floors and new wood moldings. Walls were removed to create a better flow for entertaining, and the kitchen was redesigned to make it the center of the home. The feeling is bright and modern, but perfectly in sync with Devon Hill’s historic past.
Where: Devon Hill is a sought-after North Baltimore location, at least partly because it is just over the line into Baltimore County’s tax rolls. Located on, but hidden from, Lake Avenue, this good-looking, shingle-sided group of condos is about halfway between Roland Avenue and Falls Road. Within the Devon Hill complex, this unit is in the first of the newer buildings to the right of the original mansion. It is surrounded on three sides by green hills that are owned and beautifully maintained by the Josephite Fathers. Very close to Roland Park amenities, Lake Falls Village (Ivy Bookshop!), Whole Foods and Mt. Washington. About 15 minutes from Towson, and 20 minutes downtown via I-83.
Why: Dog can walk right out the back door to, um, walk.
Why Not: Garden level means the entrance is a few steps down.
Would Suit: Downsizers, professionals looking for city convenience and county location.
NB: The Devon Hill condos were once part of Windy Hill, the former Jenkins estate, which was beautifully renovated in 1983 by developer Martin and Tony Azola. A bit of history here.
