Filmmaker John Waters is hopeful that he’ll get the green light to start filming a new movie in Baltimore, but fans shouldn’t start looking for film crews or big name stars on the streets just yet.

After erroneous reports surfaced this week that actress Aubrey Plaza has been cast to play the title role in the film adaptation of his 2022 novel “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance,” and indicating that filming is about to begin, Waters issued a statement saying the reports aren’t accurate.

“While I am thrilled and excited at the idea of Aubrey Plaza starring in my new movie ‘Liarmouth,’ the announcement that the film is ready to go in Baltimore, which was printed in an article in World of Reel and then the Guardian, is pure speculation,” he said in a statement. “Neither writer talked to me or anyone officially involved in developing this movie.”

For the past 24 hours, John Waters fan sites and other social media outlets have been peppered with legitimate-looking ‘reports’ that Plaza has been cast to star in a potential movie version of “Liarmouth” –- a sign of how much people want to see another movie by John Waters and perhaps even land a part as an extra.

The comments were then shared over and over by Waters’ fans and others in the movie industry. They come just as Waters, 77, is about to receive a major industry honor, the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Annual ACE Eddie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on March 3.

But for now, Waters said in his statement, any media reports about casting or timetables are premature. “We have no start date or green light to begin production but are working to, hopefully, make that happen,” he said.
