Johns Hopkins University was recently recognized by the Center for First-Generation Student Success, an organization that highlights universities that aim to improve the college experience for students who are the first in their families to go to college.

The university was one of 53 universities recognized as a First-Gen Forward Institution this year. Two other universities in Maryland โ€“ Loyola University Maryland and the University of Maryland, Baltimore โ€“ were named First-Gen Forward.

As a recognized institution, Hopkins will receive professional development opportunities, access to the centerโ€™s research and resources, and community-building exercises.

First-generation students make up 17.8 percent of the undergraduate student population at Hopkins, per 2021 university data.

Philanthropic efforts at the university, such as the Daniels-Rosen First Generation Scholars Fund, aim to support first-generation students. The fund, established in 2017, provides full financial support to four first-generation undergraduate students every year.

The school also established the First Generation, Limited Income Initiatives โ€“ funded by a gift from Michael Bloomberg โ€“ in 2019 to provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and professional development programs for first-generation students.
