It seems everyone in Baltimore has a festival – Polish, Ukrainian, Irish, Greek – but never one for the Brits! And yet, Americans have a love affair with the British, from Monty Python and Prince Harry to Bangers & Mash and Downton Abbey.
Local entrepreneur and marketer, Hugh Anderson, a British ex-pat, has taken on the challenge of producing the inaugural BritFest, which will take place at the Maryland Polo Grounds in Jarrettsville on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The day will be filled with music, food and drink, polo, cricket and croquet, British cars, English clothing and antiques and much more. Of course, there will be a toast to HM Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 91st birthday, celebrated this week.
BritFest will have traditional English groceries from the Queen’s Grocer, summer drinks, including Pimms, and a large selection of British beers and ciders. A selection of food trucks, including The London Chippie Truck and Gypsy Queen, will serve food throughout the day.
A selection of vendors will sell all things British. Local favorite Yoicks will display a selection of British hunt and equestrian wear. My Etsy shop Pigtown*Design will feature English antiques including china, cutlery, and books, all at great prices. Steamroller Rugby is selling rugby gear from England, Ireland, and Scotland. British footwear purveyor, J SHOES, will present a preview of its Autumn 2017 Collection and offer its iconic made- in-England CHARLIE brogue for half of its original price, exclusive to Britfest!
Spectators will be able to watch a polo match between members of US and UK teams, take in some killer croquet and possibly learn the inscrutable game of Cricket. And the Ravens promotional team will attend to generate excitement about the team’s game in London in September!
Hunt Valley Land Rover and Jaguar will bring their newest models for you to covet (and maybe even buy!). There will also be a selection of vintage MG’s and Triumphs to ooh and aah over.
And, there’s MUSIC! With the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band this week, what better than Beatlemania Again, a Beatles tribute band! And Shag, the Band will be playing other British classics including music by The Police, U2, DuranDuran, The Clash and many others.
Tickets are $25 per person and include a souvenir mug and a limited beer sampling (for those over age 21 with ID). Tickets should be purchased in advance through Mission Tix, as the event is expected to sell out.
