Rescue crews managed to save a kayaker who was stuck underwater for several minutes in the Jones Falls on Sunday afternoon, outlets report.

According to WJZ, the man was with a group who ventured into the Falls for a kayaking expedition yesterday around 3 p.m. A witness told the station that a man went over the dam in the waterway near Falls Road and 29th Street, fell out of his boat and did not resurface on the water.

Emergency crews who arrived at the scene were able to pull him out to safety after he had been submerged for several minutes. He was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where he remains in serious condition.

There are a number of kayakers who venture into the Falls throughout the year. This video from December 2014 shows some of the rough terrain and precarious dams during the ride down the waterway.

A Baltimore City Fire Department spokesperson has not yet responded to an email requesting an update on the man’s condition.
