When Target built a tower on their Gambrills, Md., store that sports their iconic bullseye logo, they probably just figured it was a good way to increase the building’s visibility. They couldn’t have guessed that some Lord of the Rings fans would make it go viral on social media.
But one Reddit user found the tower little eerily similar to the depiction of the Eye of Sauron in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films and posted the following photo with the headline “I think Target is going to try to conquer Middle Earth.”
The Internet soon exploded with hilarious captions, like “One ring to rule the mall,” and inspired photoshopped versions, like this one.
