Marylanders have one month left to apply for the state’s property tax credit for low-income homeowners and renters.
Individuals can submit an application through Oct. 1 on the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation’s (SDAT) website.
“SDAT is pleased to offer these tax relief programs to assist Marylanders who pay high property taxes or rent relative to their income,” SDAT Director Michael Higgs said in a statement. “Determining eligibility and filing online have never been faster or easier thanks to our online tax credit application system, and I encourage all Marylanders to learn more about these programs by visiting our website.”
In 2021, Marylanders received more than $58 million in tax relief through the two tax credit programs.
Low-income homeowners can apply for the Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit Program, which limits the property taxes owed based on the applicant’s income.
Homeowners who have already paid property taxes and who apply for the program by Oct. 1 can be refunded their tax credit amount by their county’s finance office.
Homeowners can submit an application online, or download a paper form to print, fill out, and mail in.
Low-income renters are also eligible for up to $1,000 of tax relief in the form of a check through the Renters’ Property Tax Credit Program. The program is available to renters who have monthly rent is high compared to their income, do not receive federal or state housing subsidies, or reside in public housing.
Again, applicants can apply online or download a physical form to fill out and mail in.
Applicants can call 410-767-4433 or 1-800-944-7403 for assistance.
