One Maryland bride blew up Instagram after posting a wedding photo while touting her “purity.”
The picture itself is typical enough: a bride, Brelyn Bowman dancing with her father at her wedding reception. It was the caption that sent it viral:
“Another one of my favs! Dancing with my first love! I was able to present a certificate of purity to him signed by my doctor that my hymen was still intact,” Bowman wrote. “Also the covenant he gave me when I was 13. When you honor God, your life will automatically honor others! I love you daddy.”
The post elicited sharp criticism from some users who were shocked by the concept of a “certificate of purity,” attacking the certificate as creepy, outrageously old-fashioned, and a sexist double standard.
Bowman has since spoken out about the post, assuring the media that the certificate was not something required by her father, but was something she decided to do “to show him, ‘Dad, I kept my word and this is what I did to show you.'”
Bowman’s father Michael Freeman, the founder of Spirit of Faith Christian Center, responded to the backlash on his own Instagram account, writing that he was surprised by “so much negativity,” but knows that “a natural man will not understand things of the Spirit for they are foolishness to them!!!”
The Bowmans have been using the hashtags #MakeJesusFamous and #PurityonaPedestal to promote abstinence before marriage. The story has earned coverage in several major news outlets, and the couple appeared on Good Morning America this morning.
