Itโs been a big week for marijuana here in Maryland. First, the state house passed legislation decriminalizing recreational marijuana, and then our House Minority Whip went on record admitting that heโd used the drug. Or thatโs what it sounded like he said, at least.
Steny Hoyer, a democrat from Marylandโs 5th congressional district, told reporters he hoped Governor Martin OโMalley would sign the bill into law. โIโm not going to ask for a show of hands. If I did, I could raise my hand,โ Hoyer said, while raising his hand. โThe use thereof, or the trying thereof. Inhaling or not. Experimentation.โ
Which sounds to meโand to a lot of other peopleโlike Hoyer admitting to casual drug use. Now, you wouldnโt necessarily think that would be a big deal in this day and ageโฆ especially when our past three presidents have gone on record saying that they smoked marijuana. But Hoyerโs spokeswoman was quick to contradict her bossโ statement: โMr. Hoyer has not used marijuana. His point was that this issue affects many people, and he believes the Maryland General Assembly took the right step to decriminalize marijuana.โ Mmmmhmmmm. Sure. Sounds convincing.
