Mayor Brandon M. Scott was sworn in as president of the Board of Trustees of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) at their yearly conference, which took place on April 9โ10, 2026 in Washington, D.C.
Featured speakers included former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and former NFL quarterback-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick. The conference draws more than 500 Black mayors and leaders from across the United States.
Scott takes the reins from Mayor Van R. Johnson of Savannah, Georgia, who served as president from 2025-2026. The announcement coming on April 10, and โ410 Dayโ in Baltimore, many on social media noted the coincidence of the timing and congratulated Scott online.

AAMA Founding Mayor Kevin Johnson swore in Scott for the 2026-2027 term. Scott was joined on stage by his wife and three children, along with former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake; Mayor Wellington Webb of Denver, Colorado; and others.
โI am truly humbled to have been elected by my brother and sister mayors to lead the African American Mayors Association,โ Scott wrote on social media, sharing pictures of the event. โThis was a special moment that I will cherish forever. My wife and children were by my side beaming with pride, bringing tears to my eyes.โ
โI would never take such an honor lightly, but I take my election even more seriously at a time such as this,โ Scott continued. โWhile Black people, Black institutions, and Black Culture are under attack at a scale not seen since the reconstruction era, Black Mayors are leading through the darkness as beacons of light. From public safety to housing, from Baltimore to Birmingham and beyond, Black Mayors are doing the work.โ
