There are a few left-leaning political action committees looking to draft Prince George’s County’s Rep. Donna Edwards to run for Barb Mikulski’s soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat, challenging centrist Rep. Chris Van Hollen, who announced Wednesday that he would be running.
The Daily Beast‘s David Freedlander sees the potential Edwards versus Van Hollen race as foregrounding deep blue Maryland’s intra-party division between liberal and centrist Democrats.
Edwards is being egged on by Democracy for America, MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Blue America, and others. In her recent Hardball appearance, Edwards said she is “seriously considering” running. But, she added, “If I were to do it, it would be because I see a pathway to victory — not because I’m making a statement.”
