Baltimore native Steve Clevenger is back in the big leagues.
The Pigtown native was called up from Triple-A Norfolk today, the team announced. The catcher steps into the Camden Yards clubhouse as the O’s continue to look for solutions behind the plate as Matt Wieters recovers from Tommy John surgery. The addition of Ryan Lavarnway figured to complicate Clevenger’s big league hopes with the club, but Lavarnway is now off the roster.
Clevenger, 29, grew up in Glen Burnie, and was a standout for Mt. St. Joseph High School. He started his career with the Chicago Cubs before moving to the O’s. He appeared in 35 games for the O’s last year.
Clevenger won’t get the start tonight. Caleb Joseph, who has been the go-to catcher in Wieters’ absence, was named in the lineup.
