Fresh off a disappointing Playoff exit, the Orioles have their eyes on Sarasota, Fla. The team released its 2017 Spring Training schedule this afternoon.
The Orioles will play their first of 17 spring games early, taking on the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates at their respective stadiums in Lakeland and Bradenton, Fla., before having their first home game vs. the Pirates in Sarasota on Sunday, Feb. 26. The most anticipated matchups, however, fall on March 7, an exhibition match vs. the Dominican Republic, and on March 8, when they play the Blue Jays, who not long ago ousted them in a late-running Wild Card game in Toronto.
The O’s will be busy as they get into shape for the season, making 17 trips around the State of Florida between an equal number of games hosted on their home turf at Ed Smith Stadium. While there will be plenty of rest for individual players, the team as a whole gets just three days off through the end of March leading almost right up to Opening Day. This Spring Training season marks the O’s’ eighth one at their stadium in Sarasota.
Soon enough, it’ll be cold out here in Baltimore and fans will be looking for a preview of next year’s Birds in warmer weather. Tickets go on sale on Saturday, Jan. 21.
