Twenty years have passed since Sept. 11, 2001 โ a day that Americans have vowed to โnever forget.โ
Baltimore City officials and community members on Saturday gathered in front of Baltimoreโs own World Trade Center building ahead of the 2021 Mercy Run to Remember 5K/11K to recognize the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and to honor the victims, survivors, rescuers of that fateful day.
2021 also marked the final year of the Mercy Run to Remember, which benefits the Baltimore City Police Foundation and the Baltimore City Fire Foundationโs assistance of families that have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
The race began in front of the 9/11 Memorial of Maryland at the World Trade Center on Pratt Street at 8:46 a.m., a tribute to the time at which the first plane crashed into the World Trade Centerโs North Tower. Traveling through south Baltimore, the race finished at Federal Hill Park.
The male and female winners of the 11K were John Ford, 29, of Phoenix (39:38.7); and Krista Harlan, 39, of Ellicott City (46:51.1), respectively.
The male and female winners of the 5K were James Heilman, 26, Lutherville-Timonium (16:02.3); and Gentry Bowie, 14, of Owings (20:28.8), respectively.
There were also virtual options for both races. To see a full list of results or look up a specific participant, click here.
