It’s often said that women have innumerable options when it’s time to dress up, but men have a decidedly more limited palette from which to choose. The necktie, of course, is the one article of clothing where men can really go all out. With this narrow strip of a fabric, men can express their personal style, and transform what might be an otherwise unremarkable outfit into a memorable ensemble.

Of course, the men at award-winning haberdashery Christopher Schafer Clothier would probably argue that men have plenty of choices when looking to dress up. It’s true, the bespoke options at Christopher Schaefer exude good taste and style, but for a small wardrobe pick-me-up, drop in for a look at the new collection of Rick Dempsey ties they’re carrying.

If you’re not familiar with Rick Dempsey ties, we’ll fill you in. The ties are all 100 percent silk (including the tie loop and tipping), made in the USA, and—oh yeah—they’re gorgeous. The Orioles legend himself engages in the design process from choosing the fabric, to displaying the collection on-air in his role as MLB sportscaster, showing millions of sports enthusiasts how to dress with style.

Rick explained in a recent interview with Baltimore Fishbowl the importance of dressing up a suit with a tie that pops: It makes the outfit, he says.  His favorite gift of choice, of course, is a tie from his collection, and if you look closely, you’ll see such celebs as Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot, Governor Martin O’Malley, and fellow former sports superstars sporting Rick’s silks.

Before perusing the Spring/Summer collection, I have to admit I thought, “How summery can a tie really be?” But the oranges, light blues, and rich floral shades of the collection are not only stunning—but totally evoke the seaside, garden parties, and all things outdoors (but you might want to leave the tie at home for your Adirondack camping trip). And if the look and quality of the ties weren’t enough, proceeds from the collection go to the Cool Kids Campaign—a local Baltimore charity,  chosen by Rick for its focus on the social, emotional and academic needs of children living with cancer.  Translation: perfect opportunity to look good while doing good.

Christopher Schafer Clothier is located at 1400 Aliceanna Street.
