I’ve never been to the Apex Theatre, nor do I know anyone else who has (that I know of). It looks seedy and creepy and, well, it probably is seedy and creepy, since it’s an adult movie theater. But I have to admit, I’m a little sad to hear that it’s slated for redevelopment.

It was hard to miss Apex’s marquee if you were driving south on Broadway. According to Cinema Treasures, it’s shown X-rated films since 1972, one of the last remaining movie houses in the country to do so. “In Baltimore, we still have one porn theater left, for people who are too poor to own a VCR,” John Waters told the Daily Beast (presumably meaning it as a compliment).

“I don’t think the tenant is the best use of the property,” Andy Billig of A.J. Billig & Co., told the Baltimore Business Journal. “The sellers have every intention of selling it. This isn’t the type of property they want to keep in their portfolio.” The owners have already been contacted by a religious organization interested in potentially converting the property into a church. Hope they give it a good power washing first.

  1. Okay cool close it but not another church? Ugh how about a theater that shows family mainstream movies? Or a restaurant? A gallery? I just hate to see these spaces converted into churches just my opinion, sorry.
