The west side of downtown could be getting another theatre in the near future. Spotlighters Theatre, which is currently located in Mt. Vernon, is looking to relocate to the Bromo Arts District.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the theatre’s leadership is eying a former Read’s Drug Store on N. Howard St. The store was the scene of a 1955 sit-in by Morgan State students that inspired the chain to desegregate all its locations. Activists have called on the city to save the building amid planning for the Lexington Square project. But the so-called “superblock” project has since derailed, and the city has reopened the collection of properties for redevelopment proposals.
For its part, the 54-year-old Spotlighters is looking to move to a larger home than is available at its current theatre-in-the-round home at 817 St. Paul St. in Mt. Vernon. A new location would also provide an opportunity for expanded arts education and space for other theatre companies, according to info about the effort on Spotlighters’ website. The theatre is seeking $25,000 by the end of the year, in part through crowdfunding, to pay for development of a proposal to the city.
