Baltimore’s Future Islands shot to stardom (after a long grind) after their viral Letterman performance in 2014, but their new level of fame hasn’t slowed down the individual members’ work in other fields.
Vocalist Samuel T. Herring recorded a verse (credited as Hemlock Ernst) on a recent track from indie-rap stalwart Busdriver. And on Sunday, Herring and bassist William Cashion, along with a host of Baltimore artists in the side project/supergroup The Snails, released a new album, free to stream at their Bandcamp page.
Songs from the Shoebox contains all the angst and propulsive beats of Future Islands with a whole lot more saxophone and plenty of the “we’re-serious-even-when-we’re-kidding” (or is it vice-versa?) attitude that has become a hallmark of Baltimore’s underground music scene.
