Five months after Eddie’s Market closed in Charles Village, a new food market has taken its place.
Streets Market opened last week at 3117 St. Paul Street, the longtime home of Eddie’s Market of Charles Village. This is the third Baltimore City location for Streets, which also has stores at 222 North Charles Street and Yard 56 in East Baltimore.
The property was acquired in December by MCB Real Estate and WorkShop Development. Previous owners Jerry and Darlene Gordon, whose family ran the business for decades, closed the store on December 30 after deciding to retire.
The developers announced in March that Streets would replace Eddie’s and that they have plans for bringing new mixed-use development to the block.
Under their plans, Streets will occupy the former Eddie’s for approximately two years before the start of construction for the new development. Upon completion of the mixed-use project, Streets will open a new store on the block.
“We recognize that Eddie’s was the heart of the Charles Village,” said MCB Managing Partner P. David Bramble, in a statement on WorkShop’s website. “That is why we knew that finding a great main-street focused grocer was critical to the quality of life in Charles Village and the success of our future project.”
Streets Market is a Washington, D.C.-based grocer currently with 11 locations, including Charles Village.
“Our stores are designed for walkable neighborhoods, with a variety catering to a diverse customer base in a compact format,” said vice president Campbell Burns, in a statement. “We are excited to introduce ourselves to Charles Village in the existing building while we look forward to a state-of-the-art store in the new development.”
According to WorkShop and MCB, the proposed development will include the grocery store, other retailers along St. Paul Street and approximately 220 student housing beds. Besides purchasing the Eddie’s building, the team has an agreement to purchase 3121 St. Paul Street, the home of Bank of America and Ajumma, according to WorkShop’s website.
“We are working diligently on preliminary design now and are looking forward to community involvement as we endeavor to make this a fantastic addition to Charles Village,” said WorkShop principal Doug Schmidt, in a statement about the development.
“I am excited the development team knew the desire of the community to have another grocery in the former Eddie’s space,” said Baltimore City Council member Odette Ramos, who represents Charles Village, in the announcement about Streets.
“While no one can replace Jerry and Darlene Gordon, Streets Market has a good reputation in the area and I welcome them to our community. I look forward to the community input process on the rest of the development proposal.”
