Ah, family. The best part of the holidays… and also sometimes the most exhausting part, too. It’s that time of year when you may suddenly need an excuse to get out of the house, so we thought we’d come up with a few fun ideas for when you need a break from all that quality time:

Send the Kids on an Adventure with Tripster

Kids at the Franklin Institute

catch of the day fish (2)Kids jump for joy when school is out for a day, a week, or even three long months. But parents are sometimes less enthused. You can’t make everyday “Take Your Child to Work Day,” nor, really, would most of us want to. But the kids need something to do, and isn’t it better for everyone if they get to spend the day doing something social, enriching, potentially educational, and most of all, fun? That’s the idea behind Tripster– the awesome service we can’t believe no one invented sooner. Think of Tripster as basically the coolest, most fun baby-sitter/extended-family-member/youth-group/field-trip-organizer ever. Because that’s pretty much how they operate. Bottom line: you need somewhere for the kids to go when school is out for the day, and Tripster has the solution.

Three Ways to Celebrate Fall in Baltimore

Fall is the most beautiful time of year in Baltimore. The air gets crisp, the sunsets are jewel-toned, the brightly-colored leaves seem to demand some peeping. Before you know it, though, those leaves will be gone and we’ll all be huddling in our parkas, dreaming of spring… so make sure to enjoy these gorgeous autumn days while they last. Here are three of my favorite Baltimore-centric ways to do so:

Since opening six months ago, the National Aquarium’s $12.5 million Blacktip Reef exhibit is not only boosting attendance at the popular Baltimore attraction, but also its reputation as a leading conservation-focused organization. Data from an ongoing national survey conducted by IMPACTS Research & Development shows the opening of Blacktip Reef has further enhanced the National Aquarium’s reputation as a leading aquarium in the United States. Achieving the highest reputational ranking since this research has been collected, the Aquarium has risen from being perceived nationwide as one of the “top five” aquariums to solidifying its position in the number two slot of the “top three” aquariums in the U.S.

Baltimore’s 10th Annual Green Week

Green Week

catch of the day fish (2)It’s Earth Day. Which is a little funny since, when you live on Earth and haven’t really got any other options, everyday is Earth Day, in a sense. But certainly it’s good to set aside time to celebrate this planet we live on, and to remember the ways in which we can continue to care for it and to engage with all the natural wonders that are just outside our doors. Helping lead the charge is Baltimore Green Works, whose 10th Annual Green Week celebrations include everything from lunchtime bike rides and lectures, to tree identification walks and tastings of local foods.
