No one goes to the fair looking for healthy food (deep fried cream cheese worm balls, anyone?), but at the very least, it would be nice if the food were sanitary. That was emphatically not the case at last year’s Great Frederick Fair, where more than 80 percent of the vendors were found to be using unsafe food practices, resulting in hundreds of food safety violations.

The 11th Annual Pigtown Festival, Home to the SQUEAKness

Today marks the beginning of an incredibly important holiday season – Baltimore Beer Week.  For those of us here at the Fishbowl who tragically must keep our safe distance from beer and all things gluten, there is still a way to celebrate in the festivities beyond lusting longingly over lagers.  Tomorrow is the 11th Annual Pigtown Festival, which celebrates Baltimore Beer Week accordingly, but is also home to The SQEAKness, Baltimore’s very own running of pigs, made complete with a betting booth this year.

The Zips Activity Stage will host an array of autumnal food eating contests (pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, pork BBQ pie…), and the Pigtown 7-11 parking lot will be transformed into a pumpkin patch and family fun area.  Complete with live music on the main events stage and trick-or-treating around the various vendors present, this is sure to be a festival for everyone.  Pumpkin patches and trick or treating for the kids, beer wristbands to sample local brews and betting on racing pigs for mom and dad, and the famous “Pooch Pageant” for the furry family member.

If pie and beer were not a sufficient reason, you can bet on racing pigs.   That’s pretty much the only reason to go anywhere these days.
