The Inner Harbor’s trash-filtering water wheel was a $800,000 investment in keeping Baltimore’s most prominent waterway free of trash and debris. One year in, it’s paid off in spades, capturing as many as 19 tons of gunk in one day, and even winning a starring role in a Ford commercial. There are 6 million fewer cigarette butts in the Inner Harbor thanks to this guy.

Baltimore’s Water Wheel Sets a New Record

Baltimore’s much-admired water wheel, which traps trash in the Inner Harbor, captured 19 tons (TONS!!!) of trash and debris this Monday. That’s enough garbage to fill 6.5 dumpsters– the most it’s ever captured in one day.

Ford’s Everyday Heroes series celebrates, well, everyday heroes (who happen to drive Fords, of course). The most recent video honors John Kellett, the designer of Baltimore’s much-beloved trash-intercepting water wheel.

Last week’s rain storm provided Baltimore with its first chance to show off the Inner Harbor’s new trash-removing water wheel in action. As the video above shows, the wheel pulled in all sorts of trash–everything from water bottles to logs to a car tire–which it then automatically sent to a floating dumpster.
