With Mother’s Day this weekend, Preakness coming up next week and warmer days ahead, there’s a general feeling of Spring Fever excitement in the air around Baltimore, particularly in the city’s restaurants. Here’s a look at what the food world has in store for us this week:

Hot Plate: Tacos at Clementine, Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, Super Bowl Parties & the Black Restaurant Challenge
Are you hungry and thirsty, Baltimore? From ice cream for breakfast on Saturday to a Tuesday night filled with fun events, this week is a big one. Here’s a look at what’s happening in and around town this week:
I see Doug Wetzel at the Waverly Farmers Market pretty much every Saturday. He’s the Executive Pastry Chef at Gertrude’s at the BMA, one of Baltimore’s longest running (and really delicious) restaurants. There he is with his Radio Flyer wagon filled with fruits and vegetables, alongside him Gertie’s owner and Executive Chef John Shields, who is quite possibly the nicest man alive. They stop at all of their regular weekly vendors, visiting, buying. They do farm-to-table but in such a quiet way, it’s just the way they’ve always done it.

I think if the Travel Channel had put a different headline on this list, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Call it, “Five exciting new-ish (mostly) restaurants in Baltimore” or “Five funky spots to get slightly expensive modern American ” and I’d just smile and nod. But they called it the “Best places to eat in Baltimore,” and so I’m forced to disagree.
Bummer. Celebrated Baker Chris Ford, who has been heading up the delectable offerings at the Baltimore Four Seasons, has taken a new job! Eater reports that he will relocate to Beverly Hills to act as pastry chef for Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro/Bakery. Ford won Food and Wine‘s “Best New Pastry Chef” in 2012.
Congrats Chris, we will miss you. Your French macarons (not to be confused with macaroon!) were to die for!
