Baltimore has community-based skillshare programs that will teach you how to fix your bike and how to mix a cocktail, but if youโre in more of an aspiring toolhead or welding wannabe listen up: weโve found the place of your dreams.
As far as I can tell, the Baltimore Foundery is the first spot in the city to unite community education with badass industrial grade tools. So if youโve ever wanted to learn how to use an arc welder or bench grinder, nowโs your chance.
The Foundery is located between Fells Point and Harbor East, in the former Kavanaugh building. It opened its doors on July 1 with the goal of โ[providing] access to industrial grade tools and educationโฆ[and] sparking innovation within the Baltimore community.โ So far, the space is open to members on certain evenings for โopen weldingโ or โproject night,โ and the groupโs first โWelding 101โ class is set for next Wednesday. The spaceโs list of available tools is extensive:
Flux Core Welder*, welding tools (picks, magnets, clamps, brushes), and welding station (x4)
Aluminum Foundry*
Metal Drop Saw
Vertical/Horizontal Band Saw
Table Grinder/Brush
Wood Drop Saw
Circular Saw
Table Saw*
Table drill press
South Bend Shaper
Table lathe**
Anvil
Vices
Angle Grinders
Belt/Disc Sander
Power Drills
Mitre Saw
General Hand Tools
*requires team support for safety

A day pass to the Foundery costs as little as $5, with monthly memberships ranging from $30-$100 a month. So what are you waiting for? Put your gloves on and get ready to work!
