There are conflicting reports from TMZ and The Daily Beast, but sources say the alleged altercation came after an argument over the Democratic presidential primary.
TMZ reported Sunday that actor Wendell Pierce (who played Bunk in The Wire) was arrested the night before on a charge of simple battery. According to the tabloid’s unnamed sources, Pierce was conversing with a woman and her boyfriend outside a hotel in Atlanta in the wee hours of the morning. Pierce, who supports Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, “became enraged” when the woman expressed her support for Bernie Sanders.
Then, TMZ relayed, Pierce “pushed the boyfriend and then went after his girlfriend…grabbing her hair and smacking her in the head.” According to The Daily Beast‘s anonymous sources, however, the woman stepped in after the fight had already begun.
To Pierce’s credit, he reportedly didn’t attempt to play the celebrity card during his arrest.
Further to his credit, the actor — a New Orleans native — has been a vocal advocate for the city’s residents who were displaced after Hurricane Katrina, and he founded a non-profit to build them affordable eco homes there.
