Baltimore will implement new speed cameras in certain school zones, starting later this month.
Drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour will be subject to fines.
Under the progressive scale, motorists will face higher fines the faster they are speeding.
Drivers will incur a $40 fine for each instance they go 12 to 15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit; $70 for driving 16 to 19 miles per hour over the limit; $120 for 20 to 29 miles per hour over; $230 for 30 to 39 miles per hour over; and $425 for 40 or more miles per hour over.
The speed cameras will be activated on or about Oct. 26 in the following school zones:
- 5700-6000 blocks of Loch Raven Boulevard near Cardinal Shehan School and Yorkwood Elementary School
- 4600-5300 blocks of Moravia Road near Furley Elementary School
- 2800-2900 blocks of West Baltimore Street near The SEED School of Maryland
- 6200-6400 McClean Boulevard near Reginald F. Lewis High School
- 2300-2500 East Northern Parkway near Baltimore Revolutionary Academy (BRAVE)
School zone speed cameras operate year-round in Baltimore City, Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. No license points are assessed.
