According to Jeremy at Duck Pie, the White Flint Mall in North Bethesda was a pretty big deal when it opened in 1977. But the owner announced in 2011 that the “pure glamor” shopping center would be demolished and replaced by a “town.” One by one, stores and attractions closed, with the last holdouts — Lord & Taylor, Dave & Buster’s, P.F. Chang’s, and one or two others — refusing to concede defeat.

So Duck Pie’s recent photos from White Flint’s food court do not show decaying, neglected ruins — but rather the uncanny image of a clean, tidy mall utterly lacking in things to buy or people to buy them.
