Mary Lee, a 3,456 pound great white shark, was spotted off the coast of Maryland this week.

The 16-foot shark, who has 8,842 Twitter followers, has spent the past few months traveling up and down the east coast. Researchers from ocean research institute OCEARCH tagged Mary Lee back in 2012; in the three years since, she’s traveled nearly 20,000 miles. Along the way she’s racked up plenty of fans; you can even buy a “track Mary Lee” t-shirt (with proceeds going to fund OCEARCH).

And while I might not go surfing if I knew Mary Lee was around, it’s also important to remember that sharks are complex animals that hurt very, very few people.

Keep up with Mary Lee here.
