The Virginia Tech men’s basketball program will play at CFG Bank Arena on Nov. 15, public records show. The contract names Penn State University as the opponent.
Another game will also be played at the arena on the same day, but the participating colleges could not be confirmed by the time of publication.
The contract was first obtained by Charles Pipkins, operator of TheD1Docket, who provided a copy to Baltimore Fishbowl.
Penn State did not sign the contract between Virginia Tech and Position Sports. Pipkins said Penn State would have its own copy of the contract. However, Penn State is exempt from disclosing a multitude of records, according to the New York Times.
“Penn State has not finalized its 2024-25 schedule,” Chelsea Vielhauer, Associate Director of Strategic Communications, said in an email.
Virginia Tech Executive Associative Athletic Director John Ballein and Position Sports, Inc. Chief Operating Officer Marc Steigerwalt signed the contract on Feb. 14, 2024.
Brian Cox, Virginia Tech’s Associate Athletic Director of Creative Communications, confirmed that Virginia Tech would play Penn State and that there would be another game.
“I can confirm there is another game to be played on that date at CFG Bank Arena,” Cox wrote in an email. “It’s not for me to say who the opponents are, but I would say it’s an intriguing matchup.”
The news comes around a month after CFG Bank Arena hosted the CIAA Tournament for a third consecutive year. The CIAA announced in June 2023 that it had extended its agreement with the city to have the tournament in Baltimore through 2026.
CFG Bank Arena General Manager Frank Remesch said in February that the staff was looking into hosting more events there.
“When promoters see how the town supports the events, it makes them want to bring more events to the building,” Remesch told Baltimore Fishbowl. “And we are. We’re looking at different basketball games and sporting events — big, huge sporting events, too. I can’t really get into that, but it’s definitely a prelude for things to come.”
CFG Bank Arena Vice President of Marketing Heather Shaffer Braue declined to comment on the games.
