Egg custard. Cherry. “Blue.” Topped with marshmallow cream. Whatever your flavor of choice, the Baltimore snowball is a timeless favorite for residents of Charm City.

In a Baltimore Heritage video, posted Tuesday on the first day of summer, Executive Director Johns Hopkins is quick to make sure snowballs are not confused with shaved ice – of the Italian or Hawaiian variety – or snow cones.

Hopkins shares the history of Baltimore’s refreshing treat, including the Walther Gardens snowball stand in northeast Baltimore, which is believed to be one of the oldest snowball stands in the country. (There is some contention about whether it is THE oldest, but we’ll let Hopkins explain that part.)
