SILVER SPRING, Md. โ€“  โ€œWe did it,โ€ said Nalini Kukke, sighing after walking out of the voting location in Leisure World. โ€œI didnโ€™t sleep last night.โ€

โ€œI want the Senate to be Democratic, the Congress to be Democratic and, of course, the president to be Democratic,โ€ said Kukke, 75. She said she is, of course, a Democrat.

Her hometown of Bangalore in India is a โ€œstoneโ€™s throw awayโ€ โ€“roughly 200 miles โ€“ from presidential candidate Kamala Harrisโ€™ ancestral village of Chennai, Kukke said. But, she said, the personal connection she feels for Harris extends beyond those close geographical roots.

โ€œSheโ€™s very human, she can relate to people,โ€ said Kukke, who moved to the U.S. when she was 20 and did software testing for the Army for 25 years. โ€œAnd the way sheโ€™s smilingโ€ and showing joy, โ€œthose are some things we need. We donโ€™t want any bickering, complaints, all those things.โ€

Her two daughters are also โ€œabsolutely Democratsโ€ and are passionate about abortion rights, which Kukke believes is the most important issue in this election.

โ€œIโ€™m a woman, I want all these youngsters, these girls, people, to get the proper service when they need,โ€ said Kukke. โ€œThat itself is enough to convince me.โ€

In Maryland, a ballot question would embed abortion rights in the state constitution.

Kukke also said she supported U.S. Senate nominee Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince Georgeโ€™s County executive who visited Leisure World twice during her campaign.

โ€œI got so many answers,โ€ said Kukke, finding the same reassurance with Harris. โ€œItโ€™s just right, I think.โ€

โ€œI wish I had a Kamala hat,โ€ said Kukke, posing for a photo. โ€œOh, by the way, I wore this,โ€ she said, holding her pearl necklace. โ€œHer favorite!โ€
