The Chesapeake Baysox announced the 29th annual โRead & Hit a Home Runโ reading program, the minor league baseball teamโs literacy initiatives aimed at encouraging children to read.
For nearly three decades, the Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, has organized the program motivating thousands of students to develop strong reading habits in the classroom and at home. Last year more than 200 schools participated, and more than 55,000 students completed the program, making 2025 one the programโs most successful years so far.
Students who complete the challenge of reading four books will earn two free tickets to attend their schoolโs designated โReading Rewards Nightโ at a Chesapeake Baysox home game during the 2026 season. Participating teachers also get two free tickets.
โWe are honored to celebrate 29 years of promoting literacy and supporting students across our region,โ said Brian Shallcross, general manager of the Chesapeake Baysox. โThe program continues to make a meaningful, positive impact, and we are excited to partner with our local schools again this year.โ
Schools from Prince Georgeโs, Queen Anneโs, Anne Arundel, Howard, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, as well as registered homeschool groups, are invited to participate in the program, which begins in January 2026. Registered schools receive all the materials needed to help teachers implement the program.
The Baysox are also bringing back the popular Jersey Design Contest, in which students can submit their original Baysox jersey artwork. Baysox mascot Louie visits the winning studentโs school to announce the winner, and the winning design is transformed into an official on-field jersey worn by Baysox players during a game. The player-worn jerseys are then auctioned off, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to the studentโs school.
Educators whose schools are not yet registered but are interested in participating can email Alexis Black, marketing operations coordinator for the Baysox. Registration is open to schools, educators, and homeschool groups. Families should contact their childโs school directly for participation details.
The 2026 Baysox home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, when the team takes on the Erie SeaWolves at Prince Georgeโs Stadium. Tickets are on sale now for the 2026 season.
