Mother’s Day is almost here and, with the sun shining and flowers blooming, it is prime season for family photographs – and matching outfits.
While many moms like the notion of “Mommy & Me” dressing in theory, they can’t find any matching dresses that they actually want to wear. If this sounds familiar, don’t give up.
At Wee Chic in Green Spring Station, owner Bridget Quinn Stickline understands the plight of mothers looking for modern, matching looks with their daughters – and she can help.
“You can be contemporary but still have fun coordinating,” she promises. She suggests forgoing the matching dresses for looks that fit together aesthetically but that play to the strengths of both mom and daughter.
Start with your look, advises Stickline. “Pick a look that is flattering and comfortable – something that you feel great in – and match your child to you,” she says. “Kids looks are easier.”
And don’t be afraid to ask for help, she says. “You can always bring your look in and let the team in the store help.”
This spring, Stickline partnered with other boutiques in Green Spring Station to pull together mom-and-me ensembles that are fresh, modern and not the least bit cutesy. They incorporate current trends, from bright color-blocking to bohemian touches, and show off the personalities of the women and girls who wear them.
Here, Stickline offers tips about how to do matching looks the modern way, as demonstrated by local moms and daughters wearing six of Stickline’s favorite looks from Wee Chic and around Green Spring Station.
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Amy’s dress, with a big and bold floral pattern, is a good match for Hannah’s more delicate geometric design. The colors connect the two dresses, for a fun and lighthearted look.
Mix fun spring trends, like brights and florals. Amy’s color-blocked dress in blue and white picks up the blue flowers on Hannah’s Kate Spade romper.
Amy and Hannah love spending time together at the movies and going out to eat. Though they share a “bleeding heart” and a tendency to care about everyone around them, Amy is also teaching Hannah to enjoy life and not take things too seriously.
Don’t be afraid to mix youthful and sophisticated. A pretty coral color connects Jodi’s sleek look and Sasha’s flowy, floral frock. Jodi’s dress, with its modern layers, and her subtly metallic accessories give her a sophisticated sheen, while Sasha’s outfit is sweet and fun.
Think pink. Shades of pink are perfect for spring days. Sasha’s rosy dress with ruffles complements the pastel watercolor graphics of Jodi’s sheath. Embrace your inner bohemian. In a patterned jumpsuit paired with an intricate vintage cuff, Sanam looks earthy, creative and gorgeous. Sophia’s sweet, solid dress coordinates in terms of color, emphasizing the femininity of Sanam’s look.
Mix textures. Perfect for a formal event, Sanam’s bold pink and coral gown by Monique Lhuillier is a showstopper. Its smooth texture stands in contrast to Sophia’s delicate lace dress – a striking combination.
