Although he wasn’t necessarily appreciated in life, Edgar Allan Poe, at least, is getting recognition in death.

In recent months, there’s been a particularly high amount of attention paid to Baltimore’s gloomiest resident. Back in November, a new Poe Toaster was appointed to carry on the mysterious tradition of leaving gifts at the writer’s grave at the Westminster Hall & Burying Ground on Fayette Street.
And the mayor’s office has just announced that Saturday, January 16 will be proclaimed a city-wide “Edgar Allan Poe Appreciation Day.” Will you celebrate by enclosing an enemy in a cellar wall, or burying a heart beneath the floorboards? Or perhaps you’ll pick a more traditional celebration and find a raven to taunt you until you go insane. However you choose to celebrate Poe Appreciation Day, I hope it’s miserable — after all, that’s probably what Poe would’ve wanted.
