APROPOE’S![]() Carrot Cake Day Wednesday, February 3, 5-10PM Enjoy homemade carrot cake and carrot cake inspired cocktails on special from 5-10PM. Carrot Cake has been made since the Middle Ages, when sugar and other sweeteners were rare and very expensive, and so people used sweet vegetables to flavor their puddings. During World War II, the British government rationed many luxury foods and household staples including sugar. To appease the nation’s sweet tooth, the Ministry of Food promoted recipes for carrot puddings, carrot-filled pies, and carrot cakes. Today, many families in the UK still serve carrot cake on Christmas Day! Leap Year Day Monday, February 29 Our team will craft the original Leap year cocktail for you as we prepare ourselves for another 4 years of hectic madness. Depending on how you calculate it, the Leap Year cocktail either turned 86 this year — or is just embarking on its 20s. The exact date this drink was invented is documented in the Savoy Cocktail Book, bartender Harry Craddock’s popular mixing manual, first published in 1930. This blend of gin, orange liqueur, lemon, and sweet vermouth was born on Leap Day, 1928. Craddock noted that the drink was “said to have been responsible for more [marriage] proposals than any other cocktail that has ever been mixed.” That’s quite a claim, although it’s hard to know from Craddock’s blurb whether all that Leap Year-fueled question-popping resulted in engagements. |
