Because of road closures and the fireworks safety zone, the public is encouraged to enter Mt. Vernon’s West Park from Cathedral Street, not from the Charles Street area closest to the Monument itself. After 7pm, the only way to enter the event is on Cathedral Street.
For the first time in five years, the Monument is open to the public again following an eighteen-month, nearly $6 million restoration by the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy. The conservation restored the Monument’s interior and exterior finishes, and included new digital exhibits as well as special infrastructure so that the holiday Monument Lights can be installed without damaging this historic structure.
Monument Lighting Posters:
$5 cash, on-site in the Downtown Partnership Tent
The 2015 Downtown Partnership Monument Lighting Poster was created by Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez. The Cuban-born Alvarez graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is an illustrator, writer, and contemporary artist whose work has been commissioned by Esquire and Metropolis magazines, and has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art PS1 gallery in New York.
