Baltimore has a strong tie to the roots of the labor movement, which date to late 1800s as workers organized for fairer hours, safer conditions, and the right to organize. The city was a major manufacturing and shipping hub, and its dockworkers, railroad employees, and factory laborers were part of the broader push that made the holiday possible. It’s worth remembering that a day off, for many of us, exists because people fought for it.
If you’re looking to make the most of the holiday around the region, the Maryland Zoo is running Wild Field Days through Monday, with extended family activities including an inflatable obstacle course and animal-themed crafts.
At the National Musuem of Railroad History and Innovation, formerly the B&O musuem, a “Working on the Railroad: The B&O and the Labor Movement” tour is being offered so visitors can learn about the evolution of workers’ rights through the lens of the B&O Railroad. Museum Admission is $5 on Sept. 7.
