See the moon landing in a way you never imagined before through PIGEONAIRE’s “Sailing Over a Cardboard Sea” at Peabody Heights Brewery. This short, absurdist play takes place on and off the moon, though the audience stays firmly earthbound.
“Sailing Over a Cardboard Sea” aims to be an “immersive theatrical spectacle that explores memory and the lush, life-giving moon,” according to the press release. The audience witnesses a reunion of the “nerds of NASA” responsible for the Apollo 11 moon landing, getting together 30 years after the July 20, 1969 moon walk by Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong.
The NASA veterans meet at Peabody Heights and find that they all remember that day a little differently from one another. “Hilarity ensues in this ensemble-driven power struggle of collective memory, toxic masculinity, and myth making.”
This is playwright Thomas Treasure’s debut, and it’s directed by his sister, Lucia A. Treasure, who is a theater and performance art veteran. Lucia Treasure is the proprietor of PIGEONAIRE, the name under which she produces theater works “grounded in the absurd and esoteric.” She’s been a theater artist in Baltimore since 1999, is a co-founder of Hole in the Wall Cabaret, and a former member of the Annex Theater company.
Each performance will be bookended by a set of songs about the moon performed by Baltimore locals Emefa Agawu and JacQuan Knox. The cast is also filled with Baltimore actors and musicians.
The play runs from March 14 through March 31, with performances on Thursdays (9:30 p.m.), Saturdays (9:30 p.m.), and Sundays (8 p.m.).
