For the first time since Baltimore Concert Opera was founded in 2009, the opera company will produce a fully staged opera with an orchestra as it presents Italian composer Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville in February 2022.
The BCO on Tuesday announced its 2021-2022 season, which will kick off Oct. 14 with a Thirsty Thursdays at the Opera performance.
On Nov. 5 and 7, the company will perform a semi-staged concert opera of Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium about a seance gone wrong.
Then, on Dec. 7, the BCO will present its “Bold Leap Forward” Gala.
On Feb. 18 and 20, 2022, the company will perform The Barber of Seville, which tells the story of a count’s attempts to woo a girl with the aid of a barber.
The opera is scheduled to be performed at Stephens Hall at Towson University, although BCO officials noted that they may change the production’s location if the university changes COVID protocols.
“While BCO will branch out to Stephens Hall at Towson University for its full production, the company remains committed to Baltimore City and its vision to Build Community through Opera,” company officials said in a statement.
Thirsty Thursdays at the Opera will return March 24, 2022, featuring American composer Lee Hoiby’s Bon Appetit, an opera about chef Julia Child.
Rounding out the season, the company will perform Italian composer Francisco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvrer, another semi-staged concert opera, on April 22 and 24, 2022. The opera tells the story of the life and mysterious death of a French actress.
Other than the performance at Towson University, all other performances will take place at the Engineers Club.
Performances will have normal seating, unless pandemic conditions change and affect social distancing protocols.
Returning subscribers can renew their subscriptions on Aug. 2. Other audience members will be able to purchase single tickets starting Aug. 16.
