Baltimore County has purchased a one-acre parcel of land in Middle River from Lockheed Martin for $1 as part of the countyโ€™s efforts to expand green space for its residents.

County Executive Kathy Klausmeier announced the purchase last week, and after a community engagement process, Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks will turn the property into a โ€œpocket park.โ€ A pocket park is a small, public, outdoor space that offers a safe, inviting place for community members to gather. They sometimes have play areas for children as well as places for relaxation, having lunch, and more.

โ€œCommunity parks are anchors for residents everywhere, and this agreement continues our work to provide more recreational and green spaces for our residents,โ€ Klausmeier said in a statement. โ€œLockheed Martinโ€™s generous offer gives us the opportunity to expand quality-of-life improvement efforts in our neighborhoods, and I know this park will be enjoyed by families for generations to come.โ€

The Middle River location, 700 Wilson Point Road, is adjacent to Martin State Airport. The waterfront site is already covered with grass, and there are no permanent structures on the land. The land overlooks Dark Head Cove and has already undergone remediation and been cleaned for recreational use.

โ€œWeโ€™re proud to support Baltimore County by donating this scenic property to the community, a contribution that reflects our shared commitment to preserving Middle Riverโ€™s natural beauty and honoring the regionโ€™s rich history in aerospace and manufacturing,โ€ said Stephanie C. Hill, president of Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, in a statement. Hill is a Baltimore native.

The property was transferred to Baltimore County on Oct. 31, 2025. It is part of ongoing efforts around the county to give families more chances to enjoy the outdoors. More projects in Eastern Baltimore County that are taking place include:

  • A waterfront park slated on 85 acres of land at the former Charles P. Crane facility grounds
  • A new trail at Rocky Point Park in Essex
  • Sparrows Point Park
  • New Recreation Activity Centers in Middle River and Rosedale

The Hazelwood Skate Park in Rosedale has the countyโ€™s second-ever concrete skate bowl.

“I appreciate the administration’s work to complete this open space acquisition, which has been a complex transaction over many years,โ€ Baltimore County Councilman David Marks said in a statement.ย  โ€œNot only is this a beautiful part of Baltimore County, but we have every right to be proud of the role this community has played in the aviation history of the United States.”

  1. The picture with this story does not match the address for the park. The picture is private property 3/4 of a mile down the road.
