Baltimoreans looking to do some good this snow day can lend a hand to a neighbor in need through the Baltimore Snow Corps.

The new pilot program allows residents to sign up to either give or receive assistance with clearing snow and ice from sidewalks.

All one has to do is submit a request (either as a volunteer or as a resident who needs help) by calling 311, use the 311 web page, or use the BALT311 app. City officials will then match volunteers with nearby neighbors who need assistance.

The program is meant to help seniors, disabled people, and others for whom it may be difficult to clear snow from walkways.

While the program offers another avenue for assistance, it does not replace the city’s regular snow operations, which are focused on plowing streets.

The program depends on the availability of volunteers, so signing up does not guarantee a resident will receive assistance.

Participation in the Baltimore Snow Corps pilot program will help the city evaluate whether to continue this model for future storms.

The city also notes that volunteers participate at their own discretion and risk, and that the city does not assume responsibility for injuries, property damage, or incidents that may occur while volunteering.
