Baltimore Police Homicide Division

Video evidence once again landed a Baltimore police officer under scrutiny this week. Sgt. Robert Messner was suspended after allegedly spitting on a suspect.

Messner, a 34-year veteran of the police department, spit on the suspect while he was in handcuffs on Monday night. The man was being arrested for disorderly conduct on Old York Rd.

โ€œThe video appears to depict the police sergeant spitting on the arrestee,โ€ Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said in a statement. โ€œThat is outrageously unacceptable and it directly contradicts the necessary community relationships we are striving to rehabilitate.โ€

Criminal charges could be on the way, Davis indicated.

At her weekly media session on Wednesday morning, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake upped the pressure when she said Messner should resign.

โ€œThere are very few things that you can do to another human being that are that disgusting,โ€ the mayor said, according to the AP.
