Video evidence once again landed a Baltimore police officer under scrutiny this week. Sgt. Robert Messner was suspended after allegedly spitting on a suspect.
Messner, a 34-year veteran of the police department, spit on the suspect while he was in handcuffs on Monday night. The man was being arrested for disorderly conduct on Old York Rd.
“The video appears to depict the police sergeant spitting on the arrestee,” Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said in a statement. “That is outrageously unacceptable and it directly contradicts the necessary community relationships we are striving to rehabilitate.”
Criminal charges could be on the way, Davis indicated.
At her weekly media session on Wednesday morning, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake upped the pressure when she said Messner should resign.
“There are very few things that you can do to another human being that are that disgusting,” the mayor said, according to the AP.
